Week 6 in a nutshell: NC State 17, Florida State 16. Inevitability. This is when those pretty blank-and-0 records start getting blemished. So, in a way, even though we had #'s 3, 4, 5, 11, and 15 lose yesterday, it doesn't feel unexpected. This is what happens at this point in the season.
Because of this, I am reluctant to get overly excited about South Carolina or West Virginia. As impressive as they've looked, someone is always left without a place to sit in musical chairs. South Carolina still has to play LSU and Florida, and they've already shown a propensity to let weak teams hang around far too long. West Virginia still has Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State. They have the firepower to beat any of them, but can they keep the guns blazing for the entire season? They're moving from a 7-game conference slate to a 9-game conference slate.
The only teams I have the utmost confidence in are Alabama and Oregon, because they've run the table before. They know there will be close shaves along the way, often against the least likely challenger. They're both pacing themselves accordingly this year, winning in similar fashion. But will I be shocked if one or both trip before December? Nope. This could be the year of South Carolina-West Virginia. Or this could be the year of Notre Dame [shudders].
